'Re-Call'
by Dawn 13th February 2012
Help!!!!! Been to dog training, recall great in class. Great with just the two of us in a huge field. However, if another dog, sheep or another living thing comes into view, she's off. Completely ignores me! I take fresh chicken, sausage, even steak on my walks for such emergencies to no avail. How i envy those dog owners who's dogs are so obedient.! In every other way she is perfect, just the re-call. Any advise?

Hi Dawn
You are not the first and you certainly wont be the last to suffer with this I will post some suggestions and things that you can practice and hopefully these will help
1 First of all if you get in to a situation where your dog wont come back when called....do not continue calling her as all you are teaching is disobedience, calmly walk over get your dog, place her on the lead and make your apologies and walk away.
2 Helen has suggested a long line which is good as you can reinforce the recall during period's of disobedience and then give a reward which will be a positive step.
3 I also use a whistle to recall my dog's when they are a good distance from me or up to something they should not be doing. A couple of good blast's always get's their attention and then I am able to create interest with my voice which will be of encouraging tones and put in some body movement and usually you will appeal to her inquisitiveness, then she will return to see what's going on....at this point I would reward with a high value treat and permit her further freedom.
4 I arrange to meet up with friend's and their dog's and do some recall training ie one dog off the lead one on, separate (say first time 5 meter's) and recall the dog who's off lead and when that's all working swap over. Gradually extend the distances.
One big rule I will ask you to follow...If your dog's return's after a period of disobedience always praise her return and when possible permit further freedom.
Hope these help a bit I am sure other's will be along with tried and tested method's that have worked for them.
